Flight Attendant Union
Celebrates NATCA's 25th Anniversary
Washington, DC, June 19, 2012 – The Association of Flight
Attendants-CWA (AFA) today joins the National Air Traffic
Controllers Association (NATCA) in celebrating a quarter century
of helping keep America’s aviation system the safest in the
world, in the air and on the ground.
After working to restore their collective voice in the workplace
and advocating for aviation safety issues, air traffic
controllers, on June 11, 1987, voted to approve NATCA as their
bargaining representative. Eight days later, on June 19, 1987,
NATCA received Federal Labor Relations Authority certification.
NATCA now represents more than 20,000 air traffic controllers,
engineers and other aviation safety professionals. They have the
safest record in history, guiding 70,000 flights per day and
over 700 million passengers per year. AFA commends these
dedicated professionals for their enormous contribution to the
industry’s remarkable safety record.
“As frontline, aviation safety professionals, Flight Attendants
depend on the professional women and men of NATCA each day to
guide the hundreds of thousands of crew and passengers safely to
destinations far and wide. We look forward to their continued
professionalism as our nation’s Next Generation of air traffic
control technology is implemented. Their contributions are
integral to the success of the safest and most efficient
aviation system in the world,” said Veda Shook, AFA
International President.
The Association of Flight Attendants is the world’s largest
Flight Attendant union. Focused 100 percent on Flight Attendant
issues, AFA has been the leader in advancing the Flight
Attendant profession for over 65 years. Serving as the voice for
Flight Attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in
the media and on Capitol Hill, AFA has transformed the Flight
Attendant profession by raising wages, benefits and working
conditions. Nearly 60,000 Flight Attendants at 21 airlines come
together to form AFA, part of the 700,000-member strong
Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at
