AFA-CWA Celebrates Juneteenth, Freedom Day
June 20, 2025 - June 19th marked the anniversary of Juneteenth, otherwise known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day.
Although the Emancipation was signed almost two and half years before, it wasn’t until this day in 1865 that the remaining 250,000 people who had been enslaved were liberated in Texas. Newly “Freed” Black women and men turned this day into a celebration, establishing Juneteenth.
Opal's walk: On Thursday, June 19th, 98 year old activist Dr. Opal Lee completed her annual 2.5 mile walk to recognize the 2.5 years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach the enslaved people in Texas. Dr. Lee is often described as the “grandmother of Juneteenth.” AFA Members around the world walked in solidarity.

While Juneteenth is a celebration of this unwavering strength and spirit, it’s also a reminder that we cannot ignore efforts to stamp out hate and prejudice. Freedom and Equality are an ongoing commitment. We will continue to fight for justice wherever we can, in our workplaces, across our economy, and in our government.
