Flight Attendants Plan Demonstration at O’Hare in Support of Teacher Strike

CHICAGO (October 30, 2019) — The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO (AFA) will extend protests to O’Hare airport this Friday in support of the Chicago teachers should the city fail to reach an agreement that improves conditions in Chicago Schools. AFA International President Sara Nelson issued the following statement:

“Flight Attendants have joined the Chicago Teachers Union and SEIU Local 73 at school picket lines, marches, and rallies. Now we are extending the protest to our workplace.

“Teachers are putting it all on the line for their students as they fight to lower classroom sizes and achieve proper school staff to include librarians, nurses, and counselors. They are fighting for students with special needs and every parent who cannot alone fight for the education their child deserves. Flight Attendants have children in CPS, family members who work at CPS, and many are also CPS alums. These are our children and our schools.

“Teachers and school staff are heroes who are fighting for the soul of the city. As Flight Attendants, we know how much it matters that a city has a good, stable, equitable reputation. We know that attracts visitors, businesses, and ultimately the flights we work to and from Chicago. We know the students in these schools may someday join us as crewmembers, mechanics, air traffic controllers or airport personnel. This is our future and we stand with the teachers in fighting for it. Our kids are worth it!

“We urge Mayor Lightfoot to focus on reaching an agreement with the people who are sacrificing everything to make sure the value working people create all over Chicago is invested properly in our schools for our children. The whole country is watching and Flight Attendants stand with our teachers.”
