AFA Honors September 11th Heroes

AFA Honors September 11th Heroes

(September 13, 2019) - From New York to Fort Lauderdale, from San Diego to Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., AFA members around the nation honored our heroes 18 years after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

September 11At the Pentagon Memorial, our AFA Honor Guard and International Officers paid tribute to our sisters and brothers with the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD) and the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO.

AFA Flight Attendants and International Officers were joined at the U.S. Capitol Flight 93 Memorial by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Chairman Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Chairman Rick Larsen (D-WA), and Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-WI) for a remembrance ceremony. We were also joined by representatives from ALPA and the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO.

In New York, at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, our AFA Honor Guard and International President Sara Nelson paid tribute alongside United ALPA Pilots and Larry Willis, president of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, who recognized the the heroic efforts of the flight crews.

In Shanksville, our AFA Honor Guard and International Vice President Deb Sutor laid flowers at the Flight 93 National Memorial and the Crew Memorial at the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel.

In Fort Lauderdale, Spirit Flight Attendants, as well as other Flight Attendants, honored our heroes by reading a tribute at a remembrance ceremony in front of the Fort Lauderdale Fire Museum.

In Fort Pierce, Florida, AFA officers took part in a ceremony honoring CeeCee Lyles, a Flight Attendant on Flight 93.

Flight Attendants also attended other community remembrances, honored our heroes by working as first responders, and paid tribute in personal and private ways.

No matter the uniform we wear, the routes we fly, or the years we have worn our wings - honoring our heroes unites us. Every day since September 11th, we know that not only are we first responders to emergencies affecting the health and safety of our passengers and other crewmembers, we are also our nation’s last line of defense in aviation security.
