AFA Statement on United Airlines Additional Cancellations to China

Washington, D.C. (January 30, 2020) — The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA President Sara Nelson, representing 50,000 Flight Attendants at 20 airlines including United, issued the following statement on United's announcement to suspend more flights to China, Hong Kong, and Singapore through March due to a significant decline in demand:

"United has been consistently assessing the situation and reviewing safety measures with our union.

"While the additional cancellations are based on passenger demand, it will also mitigate the health risk to passengers and crews. This helps all of us—public health officials, the transportation industry and workers on the frontline—limit the spread of the virus.

"We encourage all worldwide airlines to follow United’s lead. Together, we can keep people safe, eliminate this public health threat, and more quickly return the industry to full operation."
