AFA Supports Plan to Modernize Air Traffic Control System

May 9, 2025 -- Yesterday, the Department of Transportation announced plans to modernize our nation’s Air Traffic Control system. We stand resolute and unified with the entire aviation industry – unions, airlines, airports, manufacturers, and FAA – to implement the plans of the 2024 FAA bill plus these additional investments to push even more aggressively to modernize and staff up our air traffic control system.

This is decades overdue, as NATCA and all aviation unions have been warning. Air traffic controllers play a critical role in aviation and need the time and infrastructure to train new controllers and work with the best equipment.

Safety first! It’s also about our jobs & the entire economy. It is good that Secretary Duffy is taking up these plans and moving with urgency. Newark/Teterboro airport disruptions highlight the urgency as crews and passengers faced reroutes, cancellations, and reduced options.

But crumbling infrastructure is at risk everywhere. No more delays. Invest in aviation with focus and urgency. And cheers to NATCA controllers who keep us safe. Respect them, pay them, ensure they maintain a secure retirement. No distractions to our safety

Today, AFA-CWA International President Sara Nelson is speaking at the NATCA Convention, delivering a message of solidarity from all of us and power in our unions standing together, working in lockstep for aviation safety and workers’ rights.
