As Black History Month Comes to a Close, AFA Honors Members
February 28, 2025 - Black History Month may be coming to a close, but we carry the celebrations and lessons of this month with us year-round. As our International President proclaimed in her MLK address last month,
Dr. King talked of one day reaching the promised land, achieving true freedom and economic justice. While standing with the sanitation workers fighting for justice in Memphis he added. “I may not get there with you.” … it was not said in resignation. No, I believe those words were meant to invoke in all of us our duty to carry on the fight. No one leader, even as great a leader as Dr. King, can be the sole engine of the movement for jobs and freedom. With those words he deputized all of us to take up the fight, to lead, and to carry on. He pushed his powerful spirit of love into all of us to carry on until his dream could one day be reality. And, while we all remember him and wish he were still here among us, we can never simply shrug and walk away from this fight because he’s gone. We must carry on the fight for jobs and freedom for all working people.
We will continue our longstanding fight for racial justice and equity and celebrate the Flight Attendants who are making history today.
We do that in many ways, including through our Human Rights and Equity Committee. Read the latest Human Rights & Equity Committee newsletter here.
This week, we highlighted Flight Attendants from Horizon, United, and Envoy.
“Louise is dedicated to educating Flight Attendants, empowering us to advocate for ourselves and others, and works to help new hires find resources and a community through leading BIPOC orientation programs.” — Lisa Davis Warren, AFA Horizon MECP
“Kim's passion, leadership, and dedication make her a shining example of what it means to live out the principles Dr. King stood for. I cannot think of a more deserving person to be honored during this celebration.” — Brandi Neal, United AFA
“Patrice has been an invaluable member of the LEC 51 Hotel Committee since 2021. She has attended several hotel site visits and quarterly round tables, and always fights to get the best accommodations for our crew members. Thank you, Patrice, for all you do!” — Shane Spillman, AFA Envoy Council 51 President, MEC Vice President
