Flight Attendant Union Cheers For Legal Affirmation Of Marriage Equality

Washington, DC – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court paved the way for marriage equality by declaring the Defense Against Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional and striking down Proposition 8, the California law banning same-sex marriage.

“Today is a monumental day for women and men across the country who have entered into the institution of marriage but struggled for equal treatment under the law. The Supreme Court agrees with a majority of Americans that we must put an end to this shameful discrimination.

“For decades, AFA’s commitment to equal treatment of all individuals, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression has not wavered. We are hopeful that today’s marriage equality decisions put our country on a path towards greater understanding and acceptance, and we will continue to advocate that same treatment for everyone.”

The Association of Flight Attendants is the world’s largest Flight Attendant union. Focused 100 percent on Flight Attendant issues, AFA has been the leader in advancing the Flight Attendant profession for 67 years. Serving as the voice for Flight Attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill, AFA has transformed the Flight Attendant profession by raising wages, benefits and working conditions. Nearly 60,000 Flight Attendants come together to form AFA, part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.afacwa.org.
