Grieving the Loss of a Coworker: Coping with Workplace Grief

The loss of a coworker can be deeply painful, often leaving an unexpected void in both our professional and personal lives. Whether the relationship was close or simply built through daily interactions, grief can affect our emotions and overall well-being.

Understanding Workplace Grief

Grief in the workplace is unique because it blends personal loss with professional responsibilities. A coworker is often more than just someone we work with—they are part of our daily routine, our shared experiences, and sometimes even our support system. When they pass away, it can create a sense of shock, sadness, and uncertainty.

Common Reactions to Loss

People experience grief in different ways. Some may feel overwhelmed with sorrow, while others might struggle with guilt for not having known their coworker better. Feelings of emptiness, distraction, or even anxiety about safety are common. Workplaces can also feel different—quieter, less energetic, or simply out of sync.

Ways to Cope and Support Each Other

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings – Allow yourself to grieve in your own way. There is no “right” way to feel after a loss.
  2. Lean on Your Colleagues – Share memories and talk about your coworker. Support from those who understand the shared experience can be comforting.
  3. Honor Their Memory – A simple tribute, like a moment of silence, a shared memory board, or a charitable donation in their name, can provide a sense of closure.
  4. Maintain a Routine, but Be Flexible – Work can provide stability, so too can your personal routines.  Take breaks and be kind to yourself.
  5. Seek Professional Support if Needed – If grief is affecting your mental health, consider contacting your AFA EAP committee for confidential assistance at 800-424-2406.

Moving Forward Together

Healing takes time, and the loss of a coworker will always leave an imprint. However, by supporting one another and allowing space for grief, together we can foster resilience, compassion, and connection even in difficult times.
