Local Council Elections Are Underway
February 18, 2022 - Every three years, AFA Flight Attendants casts our votes to elect your Local Council AFA Officers including your Local Council President, Vice President, Secretary, and Council Representative(s). You can find all the information at afacwa.org/elections.
Each Local Council in our union is assigned to an Election Category. All airlines within AFA are assigned to one of three Election Categories. Election Category III began the election process this month with nominations.
AFA Members in Election Category III Councils have been sent nomination ballot information from AFA International. Remember, you must be a member in good standing to be eligible to vote. The Local Council positions open for the nomination process are President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Local Council Representative(s).
The Local Council election process begins approximately six months prior to the end of the current office term and are completed three months before the new term begins in order to allow for an orderly transition period.
Who can run for office?
Under our AFA Constitution and Bylaws, candidates for Local Council office must be Members in good standing of the Local Council where the election is scheduled at the time of the nomination and election.
Any AFA Member in good standing may submit a Willingness to Serve for Local Council office. If you feel you are not ready to run for an elected position, but want to get involved in your union call or email your Local Council. Our union is run by Flight Attendants. We are the union!
How are officers elected?
The election process is a two-step secret-ballot process:
- The first step is the distribution of a nomination ballot on which you indicate the name of your nominee. You are required to ensure that the person you nominate wishes to serve in the position.
- The second step in the process is the distribution of the election ballot which bears the names of all nominees who received at least two nomination votes and who have indicated their willingness to serve. This election ballot is mailed to each Member of that Local Council and the candidates with the most votes win the election.
- Local Council elections provide each of us with the ultimate opportunity to be involved in our Union, effect change, and otherwise make a difference for United Flight Attendants. Taking part in Local Council elections as a candidate, or simply casting your vote, is one of the most important ways to ensure your voice is heard in our Union.
