Association of Flight Attendants Elected to Represent Nearly 1,800 at Merged Carrier

Washington, DC – Flight Attendants at the new Pinnacle Airlines today elected the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) as their union following the merger of Pinnacle, Mesaba and Colgan. AFA is prepared to defend the rights and advance the priorities of the nearly 1,800 Flight Attendants at the merged carrier.

Washington, DC – The world’s largest Flight Attendant union, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), issued the following statement of support after new bankruptcy reform legislation was introduced today in Congress by Representative John Conyers (D-MI) and Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL). The bills are geared toward helping workers recover their rightful share of lost wages, benefits and other earnings after a company declares bankruptcy. AFA stated:

Washington, DC – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) testified today at the “Challenging the Status Quo at TSA: Perspectives on the Future of Transportation Security” hearing before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security’s Subcommittee on Transportation Security. Speaking on behalf of the world’s largest Flight Attendant union, AFA Flight Attendant Colby Alonso outlined recommendations for improving U.S. aviation security.

Washington, DC – Flight Attendants at Ryan International Airlines, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), today announced a tentative agreement with management for a first contract. The agreement was reached with the assistance of the National Mediation Board. Ryan International, based in Rockford, IL, provides private charter service as well as passenger service for the U.S. government, including the Department of Defense.

Washington, DC – Flight Attendants at Horizon Air, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), today turned down a tentative agreement with management. Their vote makes clear that the more than 500 Horizon Air Flight Attendants expect more for their contributions to the airline.

Washington, DC, June 26, 2012 – Joined by hundreds of supporters and inspirational speakers, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), Veda Shook, spoke at a rally today in support of a Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) reauthorization that serves all victims. The rally was part of a national campaign in support of the “real” VAWA bill pending in Congress.

Washington, DC, June 21, 2012 – Flight Attendants at Air Wisconsin, represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), today ratified an agreement that includes increased compensation and improvements to scheduling and quality of life issues for the over 300 Flight Attendants. The four-year agreement was reached with the assistance of the National Mediation Board (NMB). Air Wisconsin, the largest privately held regional airline in the United States, operates as a US Airways Express carrier.

Washington, DC – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) today participated in a public hearing before the National Mediation Board (NMB) regarding the recently passed amendments to the Railway Labor Act (RLA), specifically as it relates to the NMB’s merger policies and procedures. The anti-labor changes to the RLA included a new section of the statute, Section 2, Twelfth, which raises from 35 to 50, the percentage of the craft or class that must sign authorizations before the Board will conduct an election for union representation. AFA, together with many other transportation unions, argued that this new section of the law does not and should not apply to representation issues in a merger.
