One Year: Honoring Alaska Flight 1282 Crew

January 5, 2025 — One year ago, Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 departed PDX for ONT. Shortly after takeoff, a door plug on the Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft blew out, causing an explosive decompression. All 171 passengers and 6 crew members survived the accident.

The Flight Attendants and Pilots of Flight 1282 worked quickly and heroically to ensure everyone made it to the ground safely. The crew handled the incident with bravery and composure. Our union honored the crew — Adam Fisher, Steve Maller, Michelle N. Hughes, and Christine Vasconcellos— this year with the highest honor that a member may bestow upon a fellow AFA member: the C.B. Lansing Memorial Award for Heroism.

Over the last year, our union has worked closely with the FAA and NTSB to ensure the failures that led to this incident are not repeated. No cutting corners in the name of profits. Safety first always.

The Alaska Flight 1282 Crew are a shining example of our work as aviation’s first responders. In honor of them and with deep respect for each other we recommit ourselves to ensuring safety is always first.
