Senate Leadership Recognizes Our Work After AFA Capitol Visit
December 7, 2019 - AFA President Sara Nelson met with Senate Democratic Whip, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) to talk about promptly implementing our rest and all new FAA safety rules, as well as protecting Mineworkers' hard-earned pensions.
We stand with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) to demand Congress fulfill the promise it made in the 1940s and again in 1990 to provide healthcare and pensions (pensions average only $600-$800 a month) to the people who risked their lives underground to power our nation and forge the steel that built our country. Without a legislative fix to repurpose the funds, these retired miners will lose their healthcare and pensions just after the holidays. If their pension plans collapse, it will put guaranteed benefits at the PBGC at risk - and harm the markets that affect 401k plans. Also, UMWA provided critical political support that made it possible to get Flight Attendant 10 hours rest in the FAA Reauthorization Bill. They stood with us and we need to stand with them. Stronger Together, Better Together!
When Americans fly, they trust their flight attendants to keep them safe, but we need the FAA to do its part as well. Good to sit down with @afa_cwa President @FlyingWithSara today to discuss promptly implementing new FAA safety rules and protecting worker’s hard-earned pensions. pic.twitter.com/uZFyDXBeOp
