Shutdown Averted, Mine Workers Pensions and Healthcare Protected
December 20, 2019 - We are grateful this holiday season our federal union sister and brothers who do critical aviation work like our air traffic controllers, TSA officers, and FAA safety inspectors will have the certainty of a paycheck. Congress and the White House reached a deal to fund the government and avoid a shutdown. Included in the funding bill is the Bipartisan American Miners Act.
AFA members fought alongside our United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) sisters and brothers to preserve the healthcare and pensions promised to tens of thousands of retired miners. Their families and communities count on the pensions and healthcare they earned. If their pension plans collapsed, it would have put guaranteed benefits at the PBGC at risk - and harm the markets that affect 401k plans - all of which would have hurt Flight Attendants too. But after a seven year fight, today we are proud to say that we helped ensure this will not happen. We will always stand together. Stronger Together, Better Together!
