Trans, LGBTQ+, Women’s Rights Under Attack Across the Country

March 19, 2023 - Across the country, a record number of anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ+, anti-choice bills are making their way through state legislatures.

The ACLU is tracking 426 anti-LGBTQ bills in the U.S. The latest comes from Alaska, where Gov. Mike Dunleavy introduced an education bill to the Legislature requiring written permission from parents before teachers could call students a different name or use different gender pronouns than the ones they were born with. Parents could sue if schools don’t comply.

Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon on Friday signed into law a bill outlawing the use or prescription of medication abortion pills.

Our AFA Human Rights and Equity Committee is calling on Flight Attendants to monitor the ACLU and National Center for Transgender Equality Action Center for ways to take action on this assault of our rights.

For decades, Flight Attendants fought executives who exploited our sexuality and pushed gender inequality to undermine the dignity of our work and push the value of our labor into their own pockets. We organized to define our careers, keep our personal choices as our own, and lift up our role in saving lives as aviation’s first responders.

Choice and self-determination are at the foundation of why we formed our union 75 years ago. In the earliest days of commercial aviation, we were allowed few choices in the workplace. Every part of our bodies and our lives were dictated by management. These bills and laws are a direct attack on our rights.
