TSA Shoe Screening Announcement
July 8, 2025 — Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) ended the “Shoes-Off” policy, with some caveats for the realities of security in the operation. TSA will alter the process at all airports by the end of this week.
The default will look like everyone can keep shoes on, but:
- TSA Officers (TSOs) will pull people aside for additional screening of the shoes based on information from the Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) that the passenger passes through, or
- Much like today with all screening, TSOs may do random shoe screenings, and
- Each airport has discretion on how to handle it each day based on intelligence or simply direction from the security director.
While technology has advanced and threats change, we must maintain the highest standards for aviation security. The DHS secretary made a statement today that will keep our vigilance high, “Every rule is being evaluated."
Our union made a promise 24 years ago to Never Forget and we carry that promise in the work we do every day as aviation’s first responders and last line of defense.
