Unions and United Airlines Partner to Fly Hundreds of Volunteers to Puerto Rico
(Newark, New Jersey) - The AFL-CIO, Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA), Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) and United Airlines are teaming up to fly more than 300 of first responders and skilled volunteers from over 17 states to help with relief efforts and the rebuilding of Puerto Rico. The United plane will also deliver donated food, water, and essential supplies to those who need it most.
WHO: 300 skilled volunteers including nurses, doctors, engineers, carpenters, electricians, and truck drivers.
WHAT: Workers will coordinate with the Puerto Rico AFL-CIO and the city of San Juan on various efforts including helping clear road blockages, servicing hospitals patients, delivering emergency supplies and restoring power and communications. United Airlines is volunteering a Boeing 777-300ER, one of the largest and newest aircraft in its fleet, to airlift this humanitarian relief team to San Juan. In addition to the hundreds of highly skilled workers assembled by the AFL-CIO, the flight will be operated by volunteer ALPA and AFA United Airlines pilots and flight attendants. IAMAW-represented United ramp employees will also support the flight on the ground in Newark and San Juan.
