Vote to Protect All Flight Attendants, Equality
October 25, 2024 - AFA supports all LGBTQ+ Flight Attendants and workers as we fight for protections on the job and in our communities. Our mission, codified in our AFA Constitution and Bylaws, is to unite all Flight Attendants and promote equality and employment for all, regardless of race, color, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.
This directly relates to our bargaining power and efforts to deny union busters attempts to divide us or undermine our collective strength. Our ability to make good on this mission depends on the outcome of this election.
Kamala Harris has a long track record of supporting and advancing LGBTQ+ rights. In March of 2011, Harris submitted a petition to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals calling on the court to repeal Prop 8, a ballot initiative intended to ban same-sex marriage. She strengthened non-discrimination protections in healthcare. And in 2022, Harris stood alongside President Biden as he signed the Respect for Marriage Act, which requires states to recognize same-sex and interracial marriages even if the Supreme Court takes aim at marriage equality.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has endorsed candidates who called gay Americans “filth” and “maggots,” and have vowed to enact gender-affirming care bans. Project 2025, his administration’s playbook, promotes “natural family structures” and implies children should only be raised by their biological parents; calls to restrict the application of the Bostock ruling, allowing employers to legally discriminate against LGBTQ+ workers; and says that healthcare for queer youth is “child abuse.”
Discrimination of any kind undermines the strength of our country and our union. We need elected officials who actively support LGBTQ+ rights — the same rights we have fought for in our careers through our union. We must work together to protect the rights that should belong to every human being.
