AFA-CWA President Sara Nelson to Join Hawaiian Flight Attendants for Negotiations Next Week

WASHINGTON (February 20, 2020) – The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA) announced today that International President Sara Nelson will travel to Honolulu next week to support Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendants in their negotiations with Hawaiian Airlines management.

Hawaiian Flight Attendants voted 99.9% to authorize a strike, if necessary. Recently, Flight Attendants picketed the quarterly Board of Directors meeting in hopes that their concerns would be heard by the airlines’ top leadership. Nelson's arrival in Hawaii supports the Flight Attendant actions and signals to the airline the critical juncture of the negotiations.

Hawaiian Airlines Flight Attendants’ pay has fallen in comparison with the rest of the industry while the cost of living and medical expenses continue to rise. Despite the Flight Attendants’ struggles, management is still seeking cuts in medical insurance and 401(k) and work rules in exchange for minimal pay increases.

Nelson will hold a press conference with Hawaiian AFA leaders after negotiations on February 27th. Details will be released next week.

The Association of Flight Attendants is the Flight Attendant union. Focused 100 percent on Flight Attendant issues, AFA has been the leader in advancing the Flight Attendant profession for 74 years. Serving as the voice for Flight Attendants in the workplace, in the aviation industry, in the media and on Capitol Hill, AFA has transformed the Flight Attendant profession by raising wages, benefits and working conditions. Nearly 50,000 Flight Attendants come together to form AFA, part of the 700,000-member strong Communications Workers of America (CWA), AFL-CIO. Visit us at
